Ep 55: The Journey to Getting a JD/PhD with Professor Mark Satta

Thinking about a JD/PhD? Do you need to get both? How do these degrees work together? Today I am joined by Professor Mark Satta, who was one of my classmates at Harvard and who went through the path of earning a JD/PhD. Listen in to hear what advice he has for those who are interested in continuing on their education and what you could do with these terminal degrees. Mark completed his PhD in Philosophy at Purdue University and earned his JD from Harvard Law School in 2019. He is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Philosophy at Wayne State University in Detroit.

Episode Highlights

  • Someone may start the PhD because they are nervous about making that big financial commitment of law school, but they tell themselves I'm always gonna come back around. You might fall out of love with the idea of getting a law degree, and that's fine. You're not stuck doing it.

  • Your professors and faculty want to support their students. They wanna give advice. They want to root for you and be on your team. Talk with them about your plans and wants.

  • If you feel like your undergrad didn’t go the way you were hoping for, or you feel like the grades weren’t strong enough. It’s not the end of the game, there are a lot of others you can do.

Tweetable Quotes

Grad school is an exercise in delayed gratification, whether it’s the JD or the PhD. You are putting in the work in hopes that you get the things that you want later.
