D’Mia Spivey
D'Mia Spivey is a part-time 1L enrolled in the Weekend JD Program at Loyola University Chicago. The WJD Program is tailored to cater to non-traditional students seeking a JD experience. Beyond her academic pursuits, D'Mia's professional endeavors include training future Navy personnel at Recruit Training Command, commonly known as Bootcamp. Her aspiration to become a lawyer took root during high school, where her involvement in speech and debate fueled her desire to pursue a JD. In her senior year, she opted to alleviate the financial burden on her family by seeking scholarships, eventually securing a full-ride Navy Reserve Officer Training Corps (NROTC) scholarship to The Ohio State University. Upon graduation, she received a commission as a Naval Officer in 2018.
Throughout her tenure in the US Navy, D'Mia has embraced the challenges and adventures it offers. As a third-generation black military service member—following in the footsteps of her grandmother (who served 16+ years), father (4+ years), and mother (28 years)—she deeply understands the sacrifices inherent in service. Her journey as a Surface Warfare Officer has seen her deployed on diverse multinational missions and humanitarian efforts across major waterways worldwide. Despite her fulfilling military career, the dream of pursuing a JD persisted.
Now stationed at a command allowing her more flexibility for higher education pursuits, D'Mia promptly sought out programs aligning with her lifestyle. Loyola University emerged as an ideal fit. While her path to law school may have taken some time, the experiences garnered along the way have uniquely equipped her for the challenges of legal education. D'Mia is steadfast in her determination to advocate for the accessibility of law school to all, emphasizing the capabilities of non-traditional students.
